Through Pacific Women, the Australian Government will spend approximately $5 million over 10 years on initiatives supporting women’s empowerment in Nauru. The first two-year Country Plan commits $640,000 and will be implemented from 2014-2016.
The Nauru country plan was developed during a design mission that coincided with missions by the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in March 2014. One week of consultations were held with the Government of Nauru (GoN), civil society, district level leaders, local businesses and faith based organisations.
The three activities funded in the first Country Plan will:
- Improve the health sector response and services to reduce domestic violence
- Increase access to justice and improved legislation and policy environment for reducing domestic violence
- Increase leadership and decision-making opportunities for women.
