Pacific Girl regional discussion: “Girls Agency and the Pacific Girl Journey”

Girls from six Pacific Island countries have convened an online panel discussion about Girls Agency: the Pacific Girl Journey.

The Pacific Girl program‘s regional discussion was convened ‘by girls for girls’. To ensure a ‘safe space’ for open and honest dialogue, the girls chose a closed discussion led by adolescent girls and young women involved in the six initiatives supported by the Pacific Girl program across six countries. Also invited to join the closing session of the regional event, were members of the Regional Learning Network coordinated by the Pacific Girl program.

Held on 2 June, the online forum was the final event in a series of three Pacific Girl program convenings starting in May, with two multi-country events engaging with girls online, culminating in the regional panel discussion led ‘by girls for girls’.

Amplifying the voices of adolescent girls

The Pacific Girl regional convening was an opportunity to reflect with adolescent girls who have been participating in Pacific Girl programming at national and regional level. The purpose of the reflection was to:

  • Explore the experiences of adolescent girls participating in the Pacific Girl regional design and inception workshops to inform future engagement of adolescent girls in the Pacific Girl regional program.
  • Explore the experiences of adolescent girls participating in national programs including what they believe works well, what could be improved and their ideas for future programming.

Sharing insights

Following the convening, a weeklong series of #PacificGirl e-postcards featuring adolescent girls and their comments, will be shared on Pacific Women’s Facebook page.

The speakers on the Girls Agency: the Pacific Girl Journey panel – many of whom were involved in the design and inception of Pacific Girl as adolescents – shared their experiences and recommendations for the future of the program.
